Hijackers caught after chase
Two youths who claimed they are from Linden were caught by police after fleeing from a car they attempted to hijack around 20:00 hours last night.
The men Mark Forde and Richard Warde led police on a chase after fleeing from the vehicle which was crashed into Camp Street Avenue by its driver.
Reports reaching this newspaper stated that Forde and Warde hired the Uptown Cabs taxi which was driven by Floydie Williams, from outside Demico House to go to the Georgetown Hospital .
According to a source when the car reached at the junction of Camp and Middle streets, one of the men placed a gun to the driver's head and demanded the vehicle.
The quick thinking driver, who was heading north along Camp Street , crashed the car into the avenue opposite the Jerries Snackette and Hang Out Bar.
The driver bolted from the car leaving the two would be hijackers inside.
“De Rastaman (driver) run out and lef de car,” an eyewitness said.
The men realizing their predicament also fled from the car and headed west along Middle Street .
They did not get very far.
According to the eyewitness, an off-duty policeman, who was at the snackette observed the event and decided to chase after the men.
He was subsequently joined by a mobile patrol from Police Headquarters, Eve Leary.
Forde and Warde were subsequently caught in the vicinity of the parade ground on Middle Street .
The two bandits were later taken to the Brickdam Police Station along with the hijacked taxi which was damaged during the ordeal.
It is not clear if the police recovered the firearm the men were alleged to have used in the hijacking attempt.
